What is The Alexander Technique? The Alexander Technique is about change. It enables us to recognise and free ourselves from unconscious layers of muscular and mental habits thereby opening up possibilities we had never even imagined. The technique is an educational process whereby you, the pupil, by means of lessons or group classes, are taught by a teacher to pursue changes that you choose to make.
At the end of the nineteenth century, a young Australian actor embarked on a programme of self-observation in the hope that he would solve a persistent voice problem and be able to pursue his acting career. He uncovered and freed himself from his hidden layers of habit and began to teach others his discoveries. That young actor was F.M. Alexander. By the middle of the twentieth century, the Alexander Technique was established, admired by philosophers, doctors, scientists, educationalists, and many individuals appreciative of the greater ease with which they could live their lives. There are now approved training courses for teachers of the Alexander Technique in many countries and over 3000 teachers world-wide. For more information about the Technique, refer to the STAT website.
